Scarborough, Maine, October 14, 2009: PlumChoice, a leading provider of 24x7 online repair and support services for digital devices ranging from computers to smartphones, has selected Scarborough for its first regional support and training center. The company’s new 12,900-square-foot Center of Excellence at 6 Lincoln Avenue is the first PlumChoice location outside its Billerica, Massachusetts headquarters. It will employ more than 125 people on site by the end of 2009 and support hundreds of work-at-home service technicians over time.
PlumChoice, along with Maine & Company, celebrated the opening of the new Center of Excellence during a ribbon cutting ceremony today. Governor John Baldacci, Maine & Company’s President and CEO Matt Jacobson and PlumChoice’s management team greeted Scarborough community leaders and state economic development leaders at the grand opening event.
“PlumChoice is undergoing rapid growth because of the explosion in digital devices. Consumers, home office and small business users, and business travelers can’t wait for a house call or a visit to their local computer store when they have a technical problem,” said PlumChoice CEO Ted Werth. “Adding regional support and training centers like our new Center of Excellence in Maine will enable us to draw talent from a new geographical area, put technician training closer to our remote employees, and support our ongoing expansion in an efficient manner.”
PlumChoice considered 10 markets nationwide in its search for the first of a planned series of Centers of Excellence. The company narrowed its choice to Scarborough after working with Maine & Company and other state and local officials. PlumChoice’s CEO Ted Werth praised Maine & Company for its work assisting PlumChoice with a quick move-in; from start to finish the process took eight weeks.

PlumChoice has completed two job fairs to fill administrative, human resources, technical training, technical supervision and certified Tier 1 service technician positions. The company’s established remote work-at-home model for its service technicians meets the demand for ‘green’ domestic jobs that reduce commuting-related pollution, provide a flexible work environment, and return previously off-shored jobs to the U.S.
“PlumChoice has chosen Maine as its new Center of Excellence because our State provides the IT infrastructure and specialized workforce needed by this quickly expanding technology company,” said Governor John Baldacci. “In addition, our expanded Pine Tree Zone incentive program encourages companies like PlumChoice to create these technical jobs here in Maine, rather than source them out of the country.”
