The rumors are true; Fairchild Semiconductor is moving to Scarborough. New England Expedition spokesperson Gene Beaudoin – a key player in the Cabella’s development – announced last week the company’s intent to build a 90,000 square foot Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified office building across from the new Cabella’s store. Fairchild Semiconductor Human Resources Vice President Kevin London said the company plans to move 350 employees currently working at their East Coast headquarters on Running Hill Road in South Portland into the new building by November 2009.

“We wanted to demonstrate to the greater Portland community that Fairchild is here, we’re going to be here and this area is very important to us,” London said of Fairchild’s decision to apply for LEED certification.

Fairchild spokesperson Patti Olsen said construction of the three-story building – which will feature a dining room and terrace for employees, an atrium in the middle of the structure and windows that will allow each employee access to natural light – could begin within a month. Beaudoin said construction costs could be nearly $25 million, but London said the “green” design of the building could save Fairchild up to 60 percent of future energy costs.

“This process is going to establish a standard for the entire park,” Beaudoin said. “[LEED certification] is the future of building in our country.”

Beaudoin said he expected an 8,600 square foot KinderCare building and a hotel with nearly 200 rooms – both LEED certified as well – would most likely be completed before Fairchild’s new East Coast headquarters.

“Having a hotel and a daycare next door will be advantageous for our employees,” London said.

Scarborough Economic Development Corporation President Harvey Rosenfeld said the inclusion of a large office building would help the development “get back to where it ought to go.”

“It’s another exciting day for Scarborough,” he said.
